Haiti

Dr. Viggiano and Kim travel to Haiti after the earthquake of 2010 to render assistance.

Recently Doctor Viggiano described his work with Light Of The World Charities in the following testimony, which was published on their website;

Whatever it is that seems so important in your life, whatever occupies your mind, and perhaps keeps you awake at night, give yourself the gift of putting it all on hold for a week. Your trip to a medically under-served country with like-minded  health professionals will make a lasting impact on your friends, your family, and your life because it will make a lasting impact on you.

Expect to see the unexpected. Expect the indigent who you will serve, and the other team members who will serve  with you, to wow you.

Return home to a different place, a better place, because you are different, you are better. Put what is important in your life into perspective. And sleep well knowing you have accomplished something.

Donato A Viggiano, MD FACS

Preparing to go with the supplies we will need.

The hospital does not have a kitchen but food can be purchased in an open-air concession on the property.

It was difficult to tell what destruction was caused by the earthquake and what had been present for years.

Getting into Haiti was difficult. We had to take a twin engine prop plane.

Dr. Viggiano was the co-pilot (only because he was the heaviest passenger).

In Haiti we transferred to a smaller plane to go to the island of La Gonave

La Gonave is an island in the gulf off the coast of Haiti proper. It has 100,000 inhabitants and no paved roads.

The Hospital was an open air affair.

We immediately began seeing patients including Philippe who had a leg-and-life threatening infection of his foot.

And the pharmacy was not adequate for the conditions we saw.

The scrub sink at least had running water.
