Men and women have attempted to reverse the signs of ageing for centuries. In fact, Cleopatra used the fruit acid in wine to improve her wrinkles! Examples of more recent approaches to this problem include retinoic acid (Retin A®), dermabrasion, trichloroascetic acid, and phenol, each chosen according to an individual’s skin type and the nature of the problem to be treated. These treatments improve irregularities in the skin's surface by removing its superficial layers.

Lana wanted her upper lip to be less wrinkled. As a 70 year old, light skin woman with moderate sun damage, she did not like her lipstick to creep into her lip lines. Five days later she was quite pleased to have the improvement she was able to optain.
The newest weapon in the war against wrinkles is the high energy carbon dioxide laser. Its bright infrared beam can heat and vaporize tissue. Although the carbon dioxide laser has been used in surgery for decades, it was too powerful to be used for skin resurfacing. It was refined for the treatment of wrinkles with the use of a scanning device so that the beam could be moved over the surface of the skin rapidly and automatically. As the beam is scanned over the skin, the old weathered surface is treated without damaging the deeper layers of tissue. The treatment is done on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia and sedation if needed. As with any peeling treatment, some swelling can be expected after the treatment is completed. The treated area is similar to a burn and is dressed with topical ointment until healed; usually in 7 to 10 days. Although color irregularities or changes in skin texture can occur, these unwanted effects are often short-lived.
Excessive sun exposure, smoking, and genetic disposition contribute to the inevitable signs of ageing. Crow’s feet, frown lines, and wrinkles can now be treated with the scanning carbon dioxide laser. This is an exciting time for the treatment of facial ageing and skin damage. Perhaps you too can benefit from shining a new light on old wrinkles.
You may be a good candidate for laser resurfacing if you have any of the following conditions:
Fine lines, especially around the eyes
Vertical lines around the mouth
Facial scars caused by injury or accident
Scars caused by acne
Areas of uneven pigmentation, such as "age spots"
Lines caused by sun damage
If the wrinkles that you have are not too deep, a newer laser treatment (the Fractional Laser), available for you at the Treasure Coast Cosmetic Surgery Center, may be the answer for you. Because the Carbon Dioxide laser resurfaces the entire superficial layer of the skin there is a 7 to 10 day healing period. During this time you would not want to be in public. In order to decrease the recovery time this newer laser can be used in which the recovery takes only one to two days. This laser removes microscopic columns of skin. You cannot see them but these tiny openings heal quickly and cause the skin to contract. The skin becomes tighter and wrinkles are improved. This improvement is more subtle than the Carbon Dioxide laser and therefore at least three treatments are recommended.
